The kind of food and the number of meals you take are important. By understanding these parameters, you can ensure that your body receives its daily needs. There are various nutrients which your daily food must contain in the right proportion. They are: • Carbohydrates- Found in milk, vegetables, fruits, cereals and potatoes, their main function is to provide your body with energy • Fats- Found in vegetable oils, meat and meat products; they provide fuel to your body and help in building nerve tissues and hormones. However, fat intake should be kept low. • Proteins- Found in vegetables, rice, beans, pasta, eggs, meat products and pulses, they are responsible for growth and repair of body tissues and internal organs. • Vitamins- Whole-grain breads, fresh fruits and fresh vegetables are rich in them; they are essential for proper functioning of the body and in conversion of food into energy. • Minerals- Green and yellow vegetables, fruits like strawberries, tomatoes and potatoes contain them. They help in maintaining metabolic processes. • Fibers- Whole grains, seeds, fresh raw vegetables, beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and Brussels sprouts are rich in fibers. They are vital for proper digestion and for reducing the risk of cancer and other degenerative disease. • Water- It is important to drink plenty of water as it helps in hydrating skin and enhances weight loss. Your daily diet must contain a combination of the kind of food mentioned above so that you do not lose out on any essential nutrient. Take fresh organic food items as far as possible. As for the number of meals, you should have three well-balanced meals a day. Never depend on "quickies", i.e. just grabbing a sandwich or a burger for lunch or dinner.
