WEIGHT LOSS: GOING XENICAL. by Okukpon Oziegbe Pierre Xenical® is the brand name of the anti-obesity drug Orlistat. It is an oral prescription weight loss medication that's used to help people lose weight. Xenical works by preventing the action of enzymes produced by the stomach and pancreas (gastric and pancreatic lipases) which act locally in the lumen of the gastrointestinal tract to break down a type of fat known as triglycerides. The broken down products of triglycerides are then absorbed into the blood stream. Xenical interferes with pancreatic lipases by forming covalent bonds with the them in the stomach and small intestine; this essentially inactivates the enzymes so they are no longer available to hydrolyze dietary fat into an absorbable state. Thus, allowing for some 30 percent of dietary fats to pass through the gastrointestinal tract unchanged. The fat is excreted in the feces producing a reduced caloric state and weight loss almost exclusively by reduction of visceral and subcutaneous fat. Xenical is indicated for long term weight control and thus is perfect for persons who want to lose weight, are on weight maintenance or are trying to prevent regaining the weight they have already lost. This medication is used along with a doctor-approved reduced-calorie diet, exercise, and behavior modification program to help significantly overweight (obese) persons lose weight. Losing weight and keeping it off can reduce the many health risks that come with obesity, including heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, some forms of cancer, certain breathing problems, and a shorter lifespan. Furthermore, in type 2 diabetic patients who are overweight or obese, Xenical used in conjunction with a diet low in calories provides additional control of blood sugar levels when used in combination with antidiabetic agents. Xenical is not recommended for persons with chronic malabsorption syndromes, cholestasis and in persons who are sensitive to Xenical or any of the other components of the capsule. There are side effects associated with Xenical diet pills. The good news is these side effects are more pronounced early in the treatment stage and subside with continued use of pills. The most common side effects include breaking wind or flatulence, abdominal pain and/or discomfort, and increased bowel movements. The increased bowel movement actually tells you that Xenical is blocking the excess fat in the diet thereby allowing you to consume fewer calories and lose weight. The efficacy of Xenical depends on the presence of dietary fat, which is why medical professionals advice that it be taken with food. Begin treatment by taking one 120mg capsule with dinner (eat meals with low to medium fat content) and observe changes in your bowel movements. Xenical is taken by mouth with liquid sometime during each main meal that contains fat or within 1 hour after the meal, usually 3 times daily or as directed by your doctor. If you occasionally miss a meal or your meal contains no fat, skip that dose of the medication. Your doctor may recommend that a multivitamin be taken 2 hours before or 2 hours after taking Xenical because the drug may interfere with the absorption of fat soluble vitamins (vitamins A, D, E and K). You should see some weight loss within 2 weeks after you start Xenical. Tell your doctor if your condition does not improve or if it worsens.
